The Adelaide Celts were formed in March 1993 with two members, Andrew Timmins and Doug Williams. Bryan Russell joined the Celts as the 3rd member of the team in April 1993. The 4th founding member was James Burrage, who returned from the USA at the end of 1993

The Celts first performance was on the 30th April 1994 at the Royal Caledonian Society Hall in Adelaide dancing the Argyll Broadswords. Graham White and Rod Clarke joined the team about that time with Don Freeman and Graham Daley joining later the same year.

Andrew left temporarily to live in Germany in October 1994 and while he was away, Jim Black, John Barber and Michael McGregor joined the team, but the other original members had left by the time Andrew rejoined the group in May 1998. At this time the repertoire consisted of the Argyll Broadswords and the Lochaber Swords

In 1998 a decision was made to prepare Perth Assembly for the Christies Beach Celtic Fair and this resulted in a search for additional members with Tom Byrt, Neville Pope, Nick Martin and Donald Evans joining in July 1998. Matthew Highland, Craig McAinsh and Darron Richardson joined in October 1999.

Wishing to expand the dancing repertoire, two new dances were devised and prepared for the Mt Barker Highland Games in February 2000. These were the Adelaide Swords, devised by Don Freeman and Under the Southern Cross, devised by Neville Pope. Research on the internet and other locally devised dances have further expanded the repertoire.

The Celts have performed in many places around South Australia from Naracoorte in the South-East to Kapunda in The Barossa Valley and the Cornish Festival Kernewek Lowender in the Copper Triangle. In 2002, the team first performed insterstate: at the Federation Tattoo in Ballarat and at Celtic Crossroads in Canberra.

At present the active members are John Barber, Sandy Douglas, Don Freeman, Matthew Highland, Glen Howse, Craig McAinsh, Neville Pope, Darron Richardson and Andrew Timmins. The team often works with other Scottish dance groups including country dancers (especially the Burnside Country Dancers) and the Burnside Celtic Dancers to present a varied programme.

Heather Sayers has worked closely with the Celts since their inception, providing technical expertise and continues to assist. Ernie Dowler has been our omnipresent Piper since 1995 and his time and friendship is most sincerely appreciated.

Bookings can be made by phoning (08) 8265 6938 or 0419 828 029, by contacting any member of the Celts or by using the links below.
